Client - Server Details

This provides information on client's computer name, local user name, domain name, IP address and servers IP address and domain name, and IP address of Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol server and Domain Name servers

Command Prompt

GoTo: ipconfig/all

• client hostname
• client primary DNS suffix
• client IP address
• DHCP server
• DNS servers

GoTo: hostname

• client hostname

GoTo: nslookup

• server domain name
• server IP address

GoTo: ping server hostname

• tests client-server connection

Microsoft Information System

GoTo: Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Information

• client hostname
• local user name

Configure Client Details

This allows the configuration of the client computer's name

Change computer identification

XP: Start > Control Panel » System - System Properties dialog box
Vista: Start R> Computer > Properties - System Information > Change Settings - System Properties dialog box

• Computer Name tab > Change - Computer Name Changes dialog box
• Enter Computer Name, Domain Name or Workgroup Name
• Enter username and password for Administrator Account if prompted
• OK > Restart Computer

Configure Client Network

This allows the configuration of the client's network

Change client's network

XP: Start > Control Panel » Network Connections R> connection > Properties
Vista: Start > Control Panel > View Network Status and Tasks - Network and Sharing Center > Manage Network Connections R> connection > Properties

• Configure network adapter card
• Client for Microsoft Networks: ON
• File and Printer sharing for Microsoft Networks: ON /OFF
• Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) - Properties - TCP/IP Properties dialog box

1. Obtain IP Address Automatically or Use Following IP address
2. Obtain DNS Server Address Automatically or Use the Following DNS Server Address

Configure Client Firewall

This allows the configuration of the client's Firewall

Client's Firewall

Activate: Start > Control Panel »Windows Firewall: ON

Shared Folder

This allows the setting up of a shared folder on a server using Windows XP or Vista

File and Printer sharing enabled on server?

Check: C: > Menu > File > Share
Enable: Control Panel > Network > File and Print Sharing: ON - restart computer

Select Shared Folder

XP R> Folder > Sharing and Security > Share This Folder on the Network - give share name > OK
Vista Folder > Menu > Share - Select users in drop down list > set permission level (Reader/Contibutor/Co-owner)

Use Public Folder in Vista

Enable: Start > Network > Network and Sharing > Public folder sharing : ON

Map Network Drive

This allows mapping of a shared server folder to a client network drive

Map Network Drive

GoTo: Start > Computer > Map Network Drive
Select: Change to drive letter in drop-down list
Browse: Find shared folder (\\IPaddress\FolderName\)
Automatic mapping: Reconnect at Logon

Map USB Drive

This allows mapping of USB drive to client network drive

Map USB Drive

GoTo: R>My Computer > Manage
Select: Disk management R> removable disk
Select: Change Drive Letters and Paths > Change > Select Drive in drop-down list

This allow remote connection to a server

Add: Server IP address
Add: Options > User Name
Add: Options > Password
Connect: Connect
